Turning on Reduce Transparency gets rid of the watercolor translucency throughout the OS, and changing the Focus Style to High Contrast makes it a bit more obvious which apps or menu items you’ve selected. You can turn on Reduce Motion to cut down on the wobbling and zooming and parallax effects. Go to Settings, then General, then Accessibility, and you’ll find a lot of the same settings you see in an iDevice. If all of this sounds miserable to you, you can disable most of it. Like iOS 7 and its descendants, tvOS is full of motion and transparencies, though it uses its new GPU to bring some depth to the Apple TV UI that wasn’t there before. The visuals and sounds are more reminiscent of a game console than the old Apple TV or any of the Rokus. Gone are the fades to black as you jump from the home screen to an app and back again, replaced by crossfades and zooms. App tiles expand and contract as you select them. There’s a parallax effect you activate by moving your finger around just a bit on the trackpad, movement that is also used to let you know that you’ve reached the top or the bottom of a list (not unlike the rubber band effect you see in iOS apps). What you’ll notice as you scroll and swipe through the Apple TV’s UI is how much extra motion there is now. This is pretty much what this section of the screen was used for in the old Apple TV, it’s just that other developers can use it now. The Netflix app can show recent additions, for example, while the Hulu app displays popular shows. Alternatively, apps can use this to display a row of featured content that users can actually scroll through and interact with. When you highlight any of those five apps, they take over the section at the top of the screen, a bit of the UI that Apple calls the “ top shelf.”Īt a minimum, app developers are required to provide a large static image that will be displayed in the top shelf when their app is highlighted. In tvOS, users can put any five apps in that top row, which is the only one that’s fully visible when you first go to the home screen. The same went for the carousel at the top of the screen, which would display recent featured movies from the iTunes store and nothing else. Previously, the items in the very first row of apps couldn’t be changed-they were reserved specifically for content from iTunes. Click and hold the remote’s trackpad to make all of your apps wiggle around so you can move them.Īpple has made a few improvements to reflect the importance of third-party apps to this platform, though. The tvOS home screen doesn’t use folders, but otherwise the basic interactions are similar to iOS. Rounded rectangles that represent apps sit below a big carousel of featured content at the top of the screen. Boxes like Roku and the old Apple TV all came pre-populated with a bunch of channels, but the new Apple TV is more like an iPhone or iPad: it’s a blank slate that you paint on with whatever apps you want.Īt first glance the general UI looks a lot like the old Apple TV’s. The very first time you see the new Apple TV’s home screen, you’ll be surprised by how bare it looks. The first part of the setup process should be familiar to anyone who has configured a third-generation Apple TV since iOS 7 came out, and the second part is a lot like setting up an iPhone or iPad running iOS 9. Choose whether to send diagnostic data to Apple, enable or disable location services, use Siri, and download the special, periodically updated Aerial screensaver, then agree to the terms and conditions and you’ll be ready to go. You can then sign in to your Apple ID using your phone (if you’ve configured two-factor authentication, you’ll be asked to input your verification code before you can proceed). The only current iDevice it won’t work with is the iPad 2, which lacks Bluetooth 4.0. The easiest way to proceed after this is to hold a configured and unlocked iPhone, iPod, or iPad running iOS 9.1 near the Apple TV, which will communicate with it via Bluetooth 4.0 and pick up your Wi-Fi network settings. Selecting your language and region is also a crash course in using the remote for the first time-an animated picture of the remote to the side lets you know that the top of the remote is indeed a trackpad and that you should be using it for navigation. The first thing to do is pair your remote, accomplished by clicking the trackpad.
